Two-Minute Action Steps (complete once and repeat often):

• Think about your rituals as a couple. If you can’t think of any, create one. Find something that is meaningful only to the two of you—silly or serious—and practice it regularly to connect.

• Find a way to serve your spouse, without being asked, simply because you want to communicate your love.

• Invite your spouse to take some personal time to do what he or she loves.

• Leave a love note somewhere that will surprise your spouse, such as on the steering wheel, on the mirror, or in the fridge.

• Call or text your spouse to share your love or gratitude.

• The next time you come together after you’ve been apart, give your spouse a great greeting.

• Think about the things that are important in your life. Ask yourself, “Is my spouse at the top of my list?” The next time you have to choose between giving your attention to your spouse or something else (such as kids, neighbors, a social media site, or a football game), let your spouse know he or she is number one.

• The next time your spouse is telling you something, show you are listening with your body language and attention. Let your spouse know you care what he or she has to say.

• The next time your spouse makes a bid for your attention, respond. Be available and supportive through your gestures, your questions, and your input.

• The next time your spouse asks something of you, if you can, be willing to say “Yes.”

• Consider how you prepared for a date with your spouse before you were married. On your next date, dress to impress.

• Do something to make your spouse smile.

• Watch for opportunities to attend to your spouse’s needs, such as bringing a drink of water on a hot day or offering a jacket when it’s cold.

• Bring up a cherished memory from your shared history and reminisce with your spouse.

• Play or sing “your song” for your spouse at home or in the car.

• Ask your spouse out on a date and make a few creative suggestions for what you could do together.

• Surprise your spouse with a kiss or tender embrace when it’s not expected.

• Find a way to connect spiritually with your spouse, whether through prayer, couple meditation, thoughtful reflection, or quiet time in nature. Feel the connecting force those moments can bring.
